Updated October 2, 2026
BMW water-pump cost depends on the vehicle and which pump needs replacement. RepairPal’s selected model-year examples below range from $493–$679 to $1,308–$1,659, before taxes and fees. Those are national estimates, not AAR quotes. Identify the engine, coolant circuit and included parts before comparing totals or assuming a recall covers the job.
How much does BMW water pump replacement cost?
These are RepairPal’s published model-year examples, checked October 2, 2026. The estimator pages display a September 3, 2026 update. They exclude taxes and fees, do not reflect your unique location and may require related repairs.
| Vehicle | Published replacement estimate (USD) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2000 BMW 328i | $493–$679 | RepairPal 328i year table |
| 2015 BMW 328i | $1,182–$1,364 | RepairPal 328i year table |
| 2015 BMW 535i | $1,308–$1,659 | RepairPal 535i year table |
| 2018 BMW X5 | $1,333–$1,504 | RepairPal X5 year table |
The table is not a price range for every BMW, and its labels do not establish every engine or trim configuration. Do not apply the 2000 328i figure to a much newer 328i simply because the badge matches.
YourMechanic’s 328i page illustrates another reason to use the specific row: its displayed general average is $411, but its 2015 328i 2.0-liter turbo example estimate is $1,654.75. That provider’s example is not the same dataset as RepairPal’s national range. Do not average the two or use a broad page headline as your vehicle quote.
Are all BMW water pumps electric?
No. BMW’s N54/N54T/N55 coolant-pump bulletin identifies an electric engine coolant pump for its listed applications. By contrast, BMW’s April 2015 B58 technical-training manual, available as a mirrored PDF, describes a mechanical main coolant pump and a separate electric auxiliary pump for the charge-air cooling circuit.
That B58 manual also describes a heat-management module in place of a conventional thermostat. It is an original-design training reference, not a parts-fitment promise for every later B58 revision or market.
| Documented design example | What matters when pricing the repair |
|---|---|
| Listed N54/N54T/N55 applications | Confirm the electric engine-pump diagnosis and exact replacement part |
| Original B58 main cooling circuit | Do not import an N55 electric-pump package into this mechanical-pump job |
| Original B58 charge-air cooling circuit | Identify the auxiliary electric pump separately from the main engine pump |
| Later revisions or other BMW engines | Confirm the VIN-specific design rather than extrapolating from these examples |
Ask the shop to name the pump and circuit on the estimate. An electric auxiliary pump on a car does not mean its main engine water pump is electric too. A parts listing for one pump is not the price of replacing the other.
What confirms the pump needs replacement?
BMW’s N54/N54T/N55 bulletin calls for a vehicle test and diagnosis when an applicable car has a malfunction warning or overheating. It ties replacement to stored faults, test-module results or other diagnostic evidence, not merely the presence of a warning.
Ask what identifies the failed component: a confirmed pump leak, pump test result, electrical finding or another documented result. A coolant leak elsewhere, a control issue and a failed pump are different repair scopes.
If the engine is overheating, pull over safely, shut it off and arrange towing rather than continuing to drive. RepairPal’s 535i pump guidance warns that inadequate circulation can lead to serious engine damage. The estimate for a pump repair does not also establish the cost of any damage caused by overheating.
Should the thermostat or heat-management module be included?
Ask why each part is proposed and how much it adds. The BMW N54/N54T/N55 bulletin describes replacing the thermostat if necessary, rather than establishing a universal rule that every pump job includes one.
On the original B58 design, the training manual identifies a different coolant-control component, the heat-management module. Do not treat the phrase pump and thermostat as an interchangeable package across engine families.
| Estimate line | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Pump | Main or auxiliary circuit, exact application and part |
| Coolant | Applicable specification and refill work |
| Seals, fasteners and related parts | Required by the vehicle’s repair instructions or proposed separately |
| Thermostat/control module | Confirmed failure, required work or preventive recommendation? |
| Labor | What access, installation and completion checks are included? |
| Added repair | What finding supports it, and what is the incremental total? |
If work overlaps, request the added price within the combined job. Adding two standalone estimates does not demonstrate the labor charge for doing both together. Our general water pump cost guide explains the broader estimate categories; the BMW-specific component identity still comes first.
Does BMW’s water-pump connector recall cover an ordinary pump failure?
Not automatically. BMW’s February 11, 2025 revision of SIB 11 07 24 for recall 24V-608 addresses the electrical connector on affected vehicles. It explicitly distinguishes that campaign from standalone failed or leaking coolant-pump repairs.
The remedy includes connector inspection and splash protection, with affected components repaired or replaced as necessary. A pump may be replaced when needed for the specified connector damage; that does not make every pump repair a recall repair.
Before paying for a related repair, check the VIN through BMW’s recall lookup and ask an authorized BMW Center to confirm campaign status and the exact covered work. BMW’s recall FAQ says recall repairs are free at authorized BMW Centers. This guide does not determine your vehicle’s eligibility or promise reimbursement.
The older N54/N55 settlement-related extension is a separate matter. For that engine’s documented history, see our N55 reliability guide, then have coverage confirmed for your vehicle rather than assuming an older bulletin remains a current benefit.
What are common questions about BMW water pump replacement cost?
Can I compare two cars with the same BMW badge?
Only after matching year, engine, configuration and repair scope. The 328i examples above show why the badge alone is insufficient.
Does a B58 use the same pump as an N55?
Do not assume that. The cited original B58 manual describes a mechanical main pump and an auxiliary electric pump; the cited N55 bulletin concerns an electric engine pump. Confirm the exact vehicle and component.
Does the lowest online parts price tell me the installed cost?
No. It does not establish fitment, labor, coolant, required small parts or the diagnosis. Compare an itemized installed estimate, not a pump listing against a complete repair.
Must the thermostat always be replaced too?
There is no universal rule established by the cited BMW bulletin. Ask whether it is necessary, supported by a finding or proposed preventively, and check which coolant-control component your engine actually uses.
Does recall 24V-608 mean my pump replacement is free?
Not by itself. It concerns a specific connector problem on affected vehicles, not every failed or leaking pump. An authorized BMW Center must confirm your VIN and covered scope.
What is the bottom line?
Bottom line: Price the actual BMW pump and coolant circuit, not a badge or generic online average. Confirm the diagnosis, separate thermostat or control-module work, and check any connector campaign before comparing the complete paid-repair total.
